Obtaining a criminal record certificate from Lithuania

1
If you need a criminal record certificate from Lithuania, we can help you obtain it through the Embassy of Lithuania in Ottawa remotely, without the need for an in-person visit. The process is completely secure, transparent, and turnkey.

This service is available only if you have a personal identification number (asmens kodas) issued by the Government of Lithuania. You can find this number in your Lithuanian passport, national ID card, or temporary residence permit card.

Who can obtain the certificate

A criminal record certificate is issued to:
  • Lithuanian citizens residing in Canada;
  • foreign citizens who previously lived in or were registered in Lithuania and require this document for Canadian authorities, employment, studies, or immigration.

How to obtain the certificate through the embassy

To submit your application, please prepare the following package of documents:

1. A completed application form in Lithuanian. It is important to indicate your email address and phone number in the form.
2. A copy of your passport certified by a Canadian notary (True Copy).
3. A prepaid Canada Post Xpresspost envelope for the return of your certificate from the Embassy in Ottawa.

Payment is made via Interac e-Transfer. The embassy will contact you directly regarding payment details.

Processing times

The issuance of a consular certificate takes 5 to 10 business days. Please also allow additional time for mailing and delivery.

Additionally: translation into English or French

The embassy issues the certificate in English; however, please note that the consular seal is in Lithuanian. This means that to be used in Canada, the certificate must be translated into English or French. We can arrange for the translation of the document immediately after it is received.
To choose the correct certification type for the translation, we will need to know which Canadian institution you plan to submit the certificate to.
Obtaining a certificate through the embassy may seem simple — fill out the form and send it by mail.
However, many applicants encounter common mistakes that lead to refusals and wasted time:

What can go wrong when applying on your own

2
  • The form is not completed in Lithuanian.
Even if all data is correct, forms completed in English or Russian will not be accepted for processing.
  • Missing or incorrect “asmens kodas”.
Without this number, the certificate cannot be issued. The embassy does not provide informal feedback — you will only receive an official rejection letter after some time.
  • No notarized passport copy (True Copy).
A simple photocopy is not sufficient — the document must be certified by a notary. An incorrect wording of the certification (“True Copy of the Original”) may also result in rejection.
  • Payment issues.
The embassy does not accept cash or bank transfers — only Interac e-Transfer, and payment can only be made after the embassy contacts you. Many applicants get stuck at this stage and wait for weeks.
  • Mailing errors.
If you use the wrong type of envelope or fail to indicate a return address, the certificate may be lost in transit. The embassy bears no responsibility for lost mail.
  • Problems with using the certificate later.
Although the certificate is issued in English, the consular seal is in Lithuanian, and Canadian authorities often require a certified translation. Without it, the document may not be accepted.
Result: loss of time, money, and peace of mind — and possible delays or refusals in your immigration or document processing.
