Proofreading, Revision, Editing, and Post-Editing: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to improving a text, not all services are the same. Here’s a clear breakdown:
Proofreading
  • A careful read-through to catch grammar, spelling, and basic style errors. Proofreaders usually are native speakers and sometimes experts in the subject matter. The goal is a polished, correct text—without rewriting or changing the meaning. Ideal for texts that are already mostly clear and well-written.
Revision
Revision goes a step further: it combines proofreading with checking the translation against the original. A reviser must understand both languages and the subject matter to catch omissions, mistranslations, or terminology errors. Even high-quality translations benefit from this extra check.
Editing
Editing is more thorough than proofreading. Editors refine style, flow, clarity, tone, and vocabulary while preserving meaning. They may restructure sentences, improve readability, and ensure the text fits the intended audience. Editing is the right choice if the translation needs a significant upgrade.
Post-Editing (MTPE)
Post-editing focuses on machine-translated text. MT can produce a rough draft quickly, but errors in context, idioms, or terminology are common. Post-editors correct these issues, polish phrasing, and make the text usable—essential if the translation will be published or shared professionally.

You send us your translated document (plus source, if available) and any style guides, glossaries, or reference materials.
Project assessment & quote
We analyze the quality of the translation (how much editing is needed), the domain complexity, and the volume, then propose a quote and turnaround time. We provide a price quote and turnaround time.
You pay for the services
You can use Interac, a credit or a debit card, wire transfer, PayPal, or a cheque.
Assignment to editor(s)
We assign native editors / post-editors with subject-area knowledge (legal, technical, marketing, medical, etc.).
Editing / post-editing
The editor reads your translated text, compares it with the source (if available), corrects grammar, style, terminology, clarity, coherence, and ensures that the message is natural for a native reader.
Client review / feedback
You receive a draft to check, suggest changes, or point out business-specific preferences.
Final polish & delivery
We integrate your feedback, do a final pass, and deliver the final file(s) in your requested format (editable version, PDF, etc.).
Optional: return feedback to MT engine / memory
If you are using a custom MT or translation memory system, we can provide “post-edit feedback” or a version you can incorporate back into your engine for future improvements.
